What I learned from "Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook"

Social media marketing

If you follow thought leaders in the marketing space, you've probably heard of Gary Vaynerchuk. Although his book "Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook: How to Tell Your Story in a Noisy Social World" is nearly a decade old, much of the wisdom remains applicable today:

  • Make your posts native to the platform. They should not stand out and look like an ad.
  • Don't make every post a sales pitch.
  • Be funny, clever or educational, just like a person with a personality would be.
  • Include the brand's logo or slogan on images, otherwise it is too easy to miss while people are scrolling by quickly.
  • "Breaking out on Twitter isn't about breaking the news or spreading information - it's about deejaying it." This is the platform where you take the headlines and add your spin.
  • When a new social media platform emerges, pay attention to the number of active users. Even if you don't see how the platform will work for you, it's worth spending time learning about it. Your competitors probably won't notice until it is already popular and by then it might be too late to gain traction.
